The Who

What is the first community you felt a sense of belonging to and why? How has this community influenced your personal and professional life?

There are probably three interrelated communities that formed the foundation of my upbringing: the neighborhood where I lived and played, the kindergarten and school I attended, and football. I mention these three because they each represent different aspects of community: geographical, communal, and shared interests. Football stands out in particular, as it was not something I had to do, but something I chose to pursue for many years.

While all three of these communities undoubtedly shaped how I relate to others and view the world—for better or worse—the community that truly influenced me was music and my time as a musician in a band. It wasn’t just about rehearsing, recording, and performing. It was also about identity, the broader community of fans and friends, and the pursuit of aspirations and dreams. It involved work ethic, failures and disappointments, achievements, collaboration, and, above all, creativity and how to nurture and develop it.

The Why

What role do you think the communities play for the future of your business - be it from a brand, talent, innovation or sustainability lens?

Communities weave together individual stories into a collective tapestry of shared experiences. They ground and uplift us, connecting us to something greater. They are transformative spaces where collaboration sparks creativity, and diverse perspectives create new possibilities. Innovation thrives not in isolation, but in the energy of people imagining beyond the known. A community is more than a gathering; it’s a living ecosystem of curiosity, courage, and collaboration.

The What

Can you share a success story where community cultivation efforts, be it inside your organization or across the ecosystem, have led to meaningful impact? If you did, how did you measure this success?

My experience at Kaospilot highlights the power of community. Many alumni attribute their most impactful moments to the culture of care and courage within it. What sets Kaospilot apart is its emphasis on rituals, storytelling, and authentic connections rather than rigid systems. It’s the “spaces in between,” the culture cultivated over time, that truly make the difference. Here, success isn’t measured in numbers but in how well we’ve supported people in building meaningful lives. That’s the true measure of a community’s impact.

What strategies have you found effective in fostering a culture of collaboration and trust, the key ingredients for communities? How do you maintain and nurture this culture over time?

Collaboration and trust begin with connection and a shared vision. Leaders need to be courageous and vulnerable, setting the tone for openness and resilience. Thriving communities are like gardens, they adapt and grow with care, always rooted yet reaching for something enduring. Honest communication, shared celebrations, and a commitment to mutual goals are essential.

The How

How do you balance the needs and interests of the community with the business goals of your organization? What strategies do you use to align these objectives?

Business and community goals should align. Historically, business was deeply tied to community; we’ve just lost sight of that. Success must go beyond profit, it’s about the lives we touch and the impact we create. By weaving shared values into decision-making and listening to community voices, organizations can ensure mutual benefit and purpose.

The Next

What role do you see technology playing in the future of community cultivation? Are there any emerging tools or platforms you are particularly excited about?

Technology bridges distances, enabling diverse communities to connect and collaborate. Platforms like Hivebrite and IdeaScale foster engagement and innovation, while tools like Olio combine community building with sustainability. However, digital tools must complement rather than replace local, in-person connections. The challenge is to balance both, ensuring communities remain authentic and grounded.

What advice would you give to other leaders looking to adopt a community-powered lens in their organizations? What common pitfalls should they avoid?

Start with genuine commitment and active listening. If people feel heard and valued, they’ll embrace the mission. Avoid using “community” as a buzzword or engaging superficially, it erodes trust. Authenticity, inclusivity, and adaptability are key. Leaders must align community goals with organizational purpose and continuously learn from their members to foster growth and resilience.
